ARTIST STATEMENT

Reclaimed wood is my material. Regeneration is my message. My practice is centred on giving discarded and reclaimed wood another life while encouraging the regeneration of the trees we depend on. I work mainly with discarded furniture, sawmill offcuts, and other pieces of wood that might otherwise be thrown away or burned. By transforming these materials into artworks, I turn what is considered garbage into something of value. My message is not that we should stop using wood. It is that we should learn to use wood responsibly and understand that when we take from nature, we also have a responsibility to replenish it. We live in a world where people are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature. We cut down trees, yet we are not always as quick to plant them back. But we continue to depend on trees for the air we breathe and for the natural systems that support life. This is why regeneration is at the centre of my practice. My goal is for 20% of the proceeds from every artwork sold to support tree planting and forestry in local communities. I want my artworks to create a connection between art, people, and the regeneration of nature. For me, an artwork is not truly complete when I finish making it in the studio. There is another part of the work that happens beyond the studio: using the value created from the artwork to help regenerate what we have taken from nature. Use the tree. Respect the tree.
