Bill Seet Bill Seet is a contemporary painter based in the San Francisco Bay Area whose practice examines the intersection of popular culture, art history, abstraction, and digital image-making. Working across acrylic and oil on canvas, self-generated computer graphics, and giclée prints, Seet explores how images are constructed, circulated, and transformed within contemporary visual culture.
Seet studied painting at San Francisco State University, where he worked under artists Bob Bechtel, Richard McLean, and Paul Pratchenko.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I’ve always been drawn to images. I collect them constantly—photos from my iPhone, pictures from art books and magazines, advertisements, found images, and anything else that catches my eye. Over time, these images become a kind of visual archive of everyday life.
When I start a painting, I usually begin by pulling from this collection. I cut, crop, layer, and rearrange images until something unexpected starts to happen. Somewhere in that process, a composition begins to take shape.
I’m interested in what happens when very different images, ideas, and visual languages are brought together. I combine traditional painting techniques with imagery from popular culture and mass media, connecting and breaking apart familiar pictures to create something new. Sometimes the meaning is intentional; other times, it emerges by chance.
For me, the excitement is in that uncertainty. A photograph, a line, a color, or a fragment of an advertisement can suddenly change the direction of a painting. I’m interested in the stories and associations that appear when these unrelated pieces collide.
At the heart of my work is a lifelong fascination with shape, line, color, imagery, and context. I think of each painting as a kind of visual multiverse—built from collected images, random decisions, and unexpected connections. Chance plays a big part in where the work ultimately takes me.
