Flup Ja is a Belgian photographic artist whose practice, which he calls “photographic painting,” explores the boundary between the familiar and the abstract. By isolating fragments of natural and urban landscapes, he reveals unexpected patterns of colour, light, and texture in overlooked surfaces and places. His images invite viewers to pause, look closely, and discover the poetic possibilities hidden in the everyday world.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I use photography as a form of painting. Rather than documenting a place, I isolate fragments of the natural and urban landscape—clouds, walls, pavements, rock, water, and weathered surfaces—and let them become fields of colour, light, and texture. Through close framing and abstraction, familiar things lose their scale and function. A mark on a wall may suggest a distant landscape; a cloud may feel almost monumental. I am drawn to this uncertainty, where the real world opens onto imagination. My work asks for a slower way of looking. It invites viewers to follow lines, textures, and shifts of light, and to discover the unexpected poetry present in everyday surroundings. For me, contemporary art is not only found in museums or studios: it is everywhere, waiting to be noticed.
