Sofia Sokolova

I’m Sofia Sokolova, a Moscow-based artist working across digital art, original comics and monumental painting. My work explores the human body and emotions through metaphors. I studied at the Academic Art Lyceum of the Russian Academy of Arts named after I. S. Surikov and spent a year studying Fine Arts at IED in Italy. I’m studying Design and Graphic Arts at Moscow Financial and Industrial University, where I also teach. I’ve won and placed in the Moscow Vernissage, taken part in IED’s graduate exhibition, and collaborated with the Nona Grishaeva Foundation as a comic artist.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am Sofia Sokolova, a Moscow-based artist. In my practice the human “I” reveals itself in its many manifestations — through digital art, painting and graphics. My works are a map of the soul’s memory: every brushstroke is a step toward hearing the inner voice and fixing it in a form that can speak to anyone. My work resonates with each viewer: it speaks the language of emotions and stillness, through which we seek our place in the world. The process of making each piece is intensely personal and long-term; it is a journey where idea meets material and time. The works engage in dialogue with social and cultural contexts, inviting the viewer to feel: yes, I have known that feeling. Core ideas center on the deep inner state of the self, our emotions and tremors. The aim is to convey to everyone that they are not alone in their experiences; to be vulnerable is normal; vulnerability does not equal weakness; being defeated does not mean being broken. An upcoming show at Arrival Gallery, Osaka, Japan marks my first major platform outside Russia and is a pivotal step toward broader dialogue with audiences. I invite galleries and the public to engage in dialogue and exchange. The self is a shoreline where memory tides meet the wind of choice.
