ARTIST STATEMENT
I'm curious about how my perception and, ultimately, my actions are shaped biology, social adaption and environmental circumstance.
For me, the meaning of a material or conceptual object isn’t fixed; it oscillates somewhere in a particular area and will coalesce into form when attention happens on it. The attention is never neutral; it’s imbued by the circumstance, history, developmental phase and gender of the beholder. It underpins activity and an understanding of self.
To gain insight into how this dynamic plays out in my creative practice, I place myself in unfamiliar environments where my terms of reference are challenged and my awareness heightened.
The experience is explored through sculpture, painting and photography, working indoors and out. I respond to that moment’s preoccupation, using the spatial circumstance and available materials to translate it into form.
The legacy is brought to my studio for further development, primarily through painting. The final phase of this experiment is to place the work under the gaze of an audience. The success piece is where it throws up jewels of unexpected response.
I studied fine art at Leeds Beckett University. Establishing an artistic practice in 2017, I have exhibited in three solo exhibitions, wallflowers (2024), unfixed (2022) and show face (2019). I’ve also taken part in group exhibitions in the UK and abroad. My work will be shown in the Huge Gallery London exhibition in July 2026.
Temporary site specific works, strait and narrow (2024), salvage (2023) and line (2022) were installed in India, Morocco and Finland, respectively.
A film of salvage was runner up in Multimedia Category of John Muir Trust Creative Freedom Exhibition 2024 and my work is featured in the anniversary edition of LandEscape Contemporary Art Review.
